Personality // Kurt is... well, he's a sassy diva. At least, that's what he's like when he's with his friends in New Directions, especially during rehearsals. He's a very proud individual, and firmly believes that he deserves the spotlight as much as his friend/rival Rachel Berry. In addition to singing, he's big on fashion. However, he doesn't go shopping as much as he used to because of certain financial setbacks in the past year. His family is the most important thing in the world to him, mostly his father, the only real family he has left. They are very close, in spite of the awkwardness regarding the fact that Kurt likes boys. Then again, that causes awkwardness around all of his guy friends, save the ones at Dalton (and, naturally, his boyfriend).
Because of that awkwardness, he used to be harassed and bullied. Some of his friends used to be bullies, but they saw the light eventually. These things leave scars, though; he sometimes can't help a flinch whenever he sees a letter jacket in the halls. He has gotten better, at least. Another thing he can't stand, though this goes with the bullying, is being referred to as female or being compared to a girl. He may be effeminate, but he's still a guy. So what if he prefers scarves to sports? That shouldn't make a difference in his gender.
When he isn't being a sassy diva, he's sort of a hopeless romantic. He loves spending time with his boyfriend, but he's hugely intimidated by anything beyond kissing. When he likes a guy, he wants a lasting relationship with him, no more, no less. He won't do anything he'd regret later. And, when he says that he loves someone, he means it.
Just one additional thing: his favorite musical is, in fact, not Wicked, but The Sound of Music. He goes to the Sing-Along showing every year (except last year, due to unforseen circumstances).
Family //
Burt Hummel -- father
Carole Hudson-Hummel -- stepmother
Finn Hudson -- stepbrother
Physical // Compared to most of the other boys his age, he's not that tall (well, his stepbrother is a giant, so that isn't saying much). His nickname is Porcelain for a reason; he cares for his skin religiously. In fact, he has a nightly skincare routine. He times it. But all that hard work certainly pays off, as can be seen by his flawless skin (He has freckles. He works ever so hard to hide them). He looks a lot more fragile than he actually is. Anyway, he's sort of skinny and, thanks to his experience as a cheerleader, quite flexible. His appearance is always polished, except for when a costume for glee club requires it. If anyone said that he was the most fashionable young man in Ohio, he would most likely agree. After all, a lot of what he wears is designer. He's an expert at coordinating outfits. He also insists that fashion has no gender, and will occasionally wear pieces initially designed to be worn by girls.
History // Kurt has lived in Lima all his life. His mother, Elizabeth, died when he was still in elementary school. Her absence led to the closeness with his father that he enjoys, but for a long time all they had was each other. In mourning, Kurt changed his middle name to hers, just to feel close to her. Even when the bullying started, and all the other kids teased him about his appearance (or, when puberty hit, for allegedly liking boys) he put his father's needs first and hid all the bad things from him. Finally, he made it to high school relatively unscathed, but then came the bullies at William McKinley High School.
On his first day, he had slushies thrown in his face, and as soon as the day ended they threw him in the dumpster. In short, his freshman year was positively miserable, but he continued to hide it from his dad.
Everything changed when he joined New Directions. He was one of the first five to sign up, one of the only five that were there of their own volition. It was, surprisingly, a place where he found he could belong, and his talents were (sometimes) appreciated. They were his best friends, and through them he befriended some of his bullies, including his now-stepbrother. He finally came out of the closet sophomore year, to a girl who would be his best friend (there was an awkward girl-crush involved in there somewhere). After a football game (the only one their team won that entire season, thanks to him), he came out to his dad, and found that he was actually okay with it. So, at least in some parts of his life, things had changed for the better.
The bullying got worse, though. There were some traumatizing events and in general really bad things. Of all the kids in New Directions, he got harassed the worst. This eventually led to his visit to Dalton Academy to spy on the Warblers, where he found a friend (and a new crush) in their openly gay lead singer, Blaine Anderson. After Kurt got his first-ever death threat, he transferred there. He joined the Warblers, and they tied with New Directions at Sectionals, and for a while things were okay. Not great, just okay. He was safe, but he was stifled.
There was some... drama, to say the least, with Blaine. They kept flirting and not-flirting and there were some duets and not-dates involved, confusing the hell out of Kurt. Valentine's Day was exceedingly awkward, because Kurt thought that Blaine liked him when really it was the (former) junior manager at the GAP in the mall. They accidentally got him fired by serenading him at work. Kurt was there for Blaine the whole time, from the idea to the rejection, and in the end told Blaine how he felt.
At least, Blaine's rejection didn't sting as much as he supposed Jeremiah's had. He wanted to stay just friends, and that was better than nothing.
And then there was the one time where Blaine thought he was bi and went out with Rachel (that one did sting), just because they made out when they were drunk at a party. Rachel was now one of his best friends since they didn't have to kill each other for solos, and they briefly fought over Blaine. The point was proven, though, that Blaine was completely gay, and Rachel was rejected rather cruelly. For some strange reason, Kurt observed, she was ecstatic, running off to write a song and leaving Kurt to pick up his and Blaine's coffee.
There was also the issue about Kurt "not being sexy", as it were. If anything was awkward, it was Blaine trying to teach Kurt about sex. At his house. In his bedroom. Where Kurt's dad already once caught Blaine sleeping there, hung over. In short, Kurt kicked him out. Talking about sex with the guy you have a crush on is a very uncomfortable situation, after all. "Coincidentally", not long after that, Kurt's dad gave him "the talk". He knew that Blaine had something to do with it, and was incredibly bitter about it for the following week.
The week before Regionals was full of tension for everyone. Kurt was still mad at Blaine, and on top of that his pet canary (a present from the Warbler council) just died. It was frustrating that Blaine got every solo. In rehearsal, Kurt demanded to sing in the bird's memory, and Blaine sat sheepishly on the couch, for once taking the background vocals while Kurt sang "Blackbird" by the Beatles.
In the end, it was that song that made Blaine fall in love with him, demand that they sing a duet at Regionals, and give Kurt his first real kiss. From then on, they were officially boyfriends, and Kurt couldn't be happier.
New Directions won Regionals. At McKinley, Santana and Dave Karofsky (once the worst offenders) worked together to end the bullying. Dave apologized to Kurt for the hell that he put him through, and Kurt transferred back. He joined his old glee club once again, reunited with his real family, and said goodbye to the Warblers (except Blaine, to whom he would never say goodbye). He had a trip to New York to prepare for.
Junior Prom was an experience in itself. Kurt asked Blaine to go with him as his date, and the latter agreed despite previous bad experiences with school dances. Kurt made his own outfit, and everything was going great until they announced the Prom Court. Dave Karofsky was crowned king, and that was okay, but Kurt was voted as the queen, which was most certainly not okay. But Kurt was brave. He went up on the stage and got coronated anyway, and people actually cheered. Dave may have refused to dance with him, but Blaine was quick to cut in, and they actually had fun. There were no regrets about that night.
In New York, Kurt and Rachel bonded over delicious bagels and Wicked songs. They sang together on a Broadway stage, on the actual set of Wicked! That was an experience unlike any other, and they both swore that they would make it there for real one day and sing for a real audience.
In the end, they got 12th place at Nationals. Kurt realized, in retrospect, that wasn't so bad. So what if they lost? The trip itself was amazing. And Blaine loved him. And he loved Blaine.
And now he has a whole summer to look forward to.

Kurt fidgetted nervously, observing the AV club making a set for something or other. It was his first day back. He couldn't help but feel butterflies swelling in the pit of his stomach. "I don't know why I'm frightened; I know my way around here. The cardboard trees, the painted seas, the sound here..." He carefully stepped around the set, being sure not to get in anybody's way while he sang. The auditorium echoed faintly the soft pitches of his voice. "Yes, a world to rediscover, but I'm not in any hurry. And I need a moment..."
He clutched tightly to the strap of his messenger bag, walking through the halls on his way to glee practice. Everyone wandered aimlessly about, oblivious to the not-so-new boy among them. For once, Kurt smiled. There was nothing to fear, now. A locker slammed, and he didn't even notice. "The whispered conversations in overcrowded hallways," he crooned, practicing for his re-audition. "The atmosphere as thrilling here as always..." The tacky beige walls seemed almost inviting to him. Posters for Prom Court campaigns were plastered everywhere, and he allowed a chuckle seeing Quinn and Finn's faces at every turn. He knew the girl was desperate for the crown. "Feel the early-morning madness; feel the magic in the making... Why, everything's as if we never said goodbye."
New Directions missed him almost as much as he missed them. He was welcomed with open arms and open ears to hear him sing a solo, an opportunity regrettably denied him by the Warbler council on several occasions. Not that it mattered. At the end of the song, after he took his bows and sat as close to Rachel and Mercedes as possible, he sighed contentedly, glad to be home again.
