Rachel was ready for this. It had taken many practices and many more hours of vocal training, but she was ready for this competition. She herself had spent twenty four hours in the last week just working on the solo that she had. Normally Rachel wouldn’t let herself get nervous – but right now, all she wanted to do was win. To show vocal adrenaline that they could stand up to their strength, and fight tooth and nail to get where they wanted to go; all the way to nationals. Playing with the edge of her dress, she waited at the edge of the stage, listening for the man to call her up. The New Directions group stood in a circle all trying to calm themselves and get ready for the performance. Rachel grabbed Kurt’s hand to her left, and Mercedes hand to her right. “We can do this.”
“we can if you don’t break my hand first.” Mercedes voice snapped. Rachel removed her had from the girls and closed her eyes trying to calm herself. If she freaked herself out now – the last thing that would happen is that she would hit every single note with such perfection that it would bring tears to the judge’s eyes. Only perfection would stir the judges to pick them instead of their rivals at Carmel. What she really wanted was for Jesse to tell her that she would be ok, that it doesn’t matter how good Vocal Adrenaline is, that she in herself was strong enough to take them down. The talking and squabbling between the group was surprising. Brittany and Santana were talking, puck and lauren were bitching about something, and mike was trying to tell finn how do finish the dance that he had refused to learn in the beginning because it was with Rachel, but then realized that he had better learn it quick.
“Our next group is Mckinley High’s New Directions.” All eyes fell to Rachel and all the bickering had stopped. Looking to each of them, Rachel turned and walked onto the stage, the makeshift lights flickered in the girls eyes and she smiled past the small pain that lingered in her retinas. Taking center stage, she grasped onto the microphone stand, looking for Jesse in the seats for some ounce of confidence. Catching eyes with him, she smiled at his response and took in her surroundings. The competition was outside – which wasn’t normal, and she could feel the heat beat down on her, and back up from the metal stands and the stage. Brad took stage sitting at the piano and began the song. Looking at Jesse, she felt her power come, and she was ready.

After all the practice leading up to this day, this moment, Kurt thought that he was mentally prepared. In reality, he'd never been more nervous in his life, save the time he came out to his father, but that wasn't even a point for comparison. There was no reason whatsoever to be scared; stage-fright wasn't a common thing for him, and honestly the stakes weren't that high. He knew his part in the group numbers backwards and forwards, inside out. The performance wasn't an issue. He knew he would do well. It was the audience he wasn't prepared for, or rather a specific someone who would be watching him closely.
This was the first time he would actually be against Blaine in competition. He didn't even know what to think about it. Sure, he wanted to win, since it could potentially give New Directions the upper hand when the real competitions came up, but that didn't mean that he wanted Blaine (or the other Warblers, for that matter) to fail. Would he be considered a traitor for cheering them on? Surely not. Everyone in New Directions loved Blaine. It wasn't a crime to wish success for one's boyfriend, right?
When Rachel grabbed his hand, he was quick to squeeze back. She may have been crushing his hand, as appeared to be the case with Mercedes, but it was welcome given his state. "You're up. Break a leg and make us proud." As she let them go and took the stage, Kurt immediately turned to Mercedes.
"What's got you so worked up?" she asked. Apparently, he was no better than Rachel.
"I know that we are going to be amazing and likely have this in the bag, but what happens if-- when the Warblers don't do as well?" He sneaked a peek beyond the curtain, where all eyes in the audience were trained on Rachel. "What do I do if they come in last?"
"What did you do last time?" She clearly wasn't in the mood to put up with what could turn into relationship drama.
"There wasn't a last time. I was in the Warblers in our last competition with them." Either she was trying to get "in the zone" and focus on her features in the group numbers (totally deserved, as she was an amazing singer), or she had genuinely forgotten that Kurt was ever not in New Directions. He wasn't sure whether to be annoyed or honored that he belonged.
Instead of bothering Mercedes longer, he decided that his time waiting for the cue to enter would be better-spent helping teach Finn the choreography. The boy was almost helpless at this point, but if "You Can't Always Get What You Want" was possible, then so was this.
At this point, he was almost refusing to go on, since it required him to be within 5 feet of his ex-girlfriend. Kurt sighed. "Finn... you may not think you need to hear this, but... get over it. She's not going to come crawling back to you." He was one of the few witnesses that could say that Jesse St. James was, in fact, not a complete douche, not that Finn would believe it for a second.
"Easy for you to say. You've never been dumped," Finn scowled immaturely. "If she didn't want me, then she didn't have to lead me on and then rub it in my face."
"I understand that there were words said, but it's better to stop being such a baby about it." In some ways, in the back of his mind, he felt that his step-brother almost deserved this. "In case you don't remember, I have been dumped, and by you, no less. There were words said then, and I got over it just fine." Now Finn just looked pathetically guilty. Kurt softened. He knew that Finn never really meant what he said that day, no matter how much he was hurt by it. "Look, it's supposed to be awkward when you're singing with her in Seasons/La Vie. Roger and Mimi didn't even really get along for the majority of the first act in RENT," he offered. "It's in character to be sort of angry with her anyway. But don't let it stay like this."
Rachel's final note rang out in the auditorium, and it was time for the rest of the group to go onstage. One step closer to the moment of truth.
Word count: 800-something. I don't know what came over me. Tagged: Everyone~ and I want to see reactions from the audience, too Notes: lol what even. don't anyone feel pressured to do a post this long in this thread. it's just... things happen backstage. i would know.
