He never meant to get angry. It hadn't even gotten this bad when she triple-cast him in that music video that she made (really, Jesse played the part of Joey the best, and everyone knew it). The only thing was that, he guessed, he was so sick of hearing about Finn. Ever since Jesse and Rachel started dating initially, the jock somehow always managed to get in the way. When Jesse went back to Vocal Adrenaline, Rachel went crying into his arms. He couldn't stand it, and if she still had feelings for Finn, it would tear him apart from the inside out. Maybe it would end however it ended, but as long as he still had a shot he would fight for her.
It seemed like his ranting was causing Rachel some tension, evidenced by the rising number labeled BP for blood pressure, and that wasn't good in the least. His expression softened before he gave in to her request. If she wanted him to be the bigger man, he would. He wasn't immature; at least, not entirely. It wasn't surprising in the least that no one picked up on the other end. Finn's mumbling, rambling voice message answered him instead, and really, didn't he realize that Jesse wouldn't call unless it was something actually important?
Once he was done and they were holding hands comfortably again, Jesse said, "I'm sorry for snapping. You didn't deserve that. And I'm sorry for back then, too. Breaking your heart really wasn't on the agenda for me." Just like when he was talking to her mother, he mused. What did he say exactly? "Now I kinda like her. I don't want her to get hurt." The whole "kinda liking" was an understatement, of course. One doesn't just tell their show choir coach that they're in love with their daughter; the world doesn't word that way. "Everything I said to you, before egging you, before prom... I meant it, every word. I just wanted you to know that." He nodded, looking straight into her eyes, wanting to see into her soul if she really meant it the same way.
"Even if I didn't want to stay, I wouldn't have much choice," Jesse chuckled. "I had my scholarship taken away. I flunked out. I couldn't even get a job there, much less somewhere to live. But I'd rather be here with you; that's why I came back in the first place." Rachel tried to return his romantic gesture, a little a la Moulin Rouge almost (they could probably make a spectacular, pardon the pun, Christian and Satine as well), but struggled keeping up the tune because of the lack of breath support. "You should probably rest your voice until you can breathe on your own, at least," he suggested gently, and she nodded as she backed away. He nearly whined in protest of the loss of contact, but that would have been horrifically undignified, especially in such a public place as a hospital.
Jesse tried not to show pity when Rachel professed her disbelief that Santana would do anything to harm her. "I don't know, Rachel. She's been really pissed ever since Nationals. If you don't believe me, you can ask Kurt. He might have seen some of it." She exclaimed about Swan Lake with a start. "You can't dance in your condition, so you'll probably miss a rehearsal or two, but I wouldn't be too worried. You're the best dancer in there. Other than me, of course," he added jokingly. It was a bit of a disappointment that she couldn't practice, though. He lost yet another excuse to be close to her.

The last thing that Rachel wanted to do was create tension between the two guys, or Jesse and the rest of New Directions. It was hard for them to forgive him for what he had done, and to Rachel that was obnoxious. He had hurt her the worst, played with her heart strings, threw eggs at her, and then left for Vocal Adrenaline. If Rachel could forgive what he had done, why in all honesty could they not? Were they upset that he told them the truth about their singing – well he just said it in an all out way that Rachel had learned wasn’t the best for them. She knew they were good – but in her eyes she always would be better, but that didn’t mean that they were bad. That is what Jesse told them, and they didn’t take kindly to his criticisms. Maybe the fact that they had heard it from two people really pushed their buttons, they seemed fine with Rachel – why couldn’t they hear it from Jesse…? Of course Finn just didn’t want anything to do with Jesse. The competition between the two, and the love triangle that Rachel could see forming annoyed the tall boy and probably made him itch. The quarterback wasn’t used to not getting what he wanted.
Jesse’s soft face made Rachel smile, both on the inside and out. The dramatic girl loved every moment of when her soul smiled. It always did when she sang – so she promised herself that one day she would marry a guy who would give her a similar feeling. Nothing could compare to the crowd and the music, but it was close, and she still loved it. “It’s alright.” She smiled, taking in the warmth of his hands “but can I ask a question…?” she waited for approval before , “If breaking it…wasn’t on your agenda…what was…?” searching in his face for the answer before hearing him speak about prom and the egging, he had meant everything that he had said to her, “Jesse…” She blushed, leaning over, putting her hand over his jaw she closed her eyes and placed a perfect kiss on his pale pursed lips before pulling away, ever so slightly, making sure that her face combed his for any action of dislike. Rachel felt as if she was going out on a limb, but god if felt so good. Keeping the little distance Rachel replied, “I still care, so much about you Jesse. There were nights I stayed up and cried, wishing that you never did that.” She closed her eyes, feeling her hands through his hair as their foreheads brushed, “I had always thought that we were perfect for one another.”
Everything that she said was true – it wasn’t in Rachels nature to lie, the only time that she had done it was to sunshine when she threatened Rachel’s seat in New Directions. It was a quality that most normally saw in her, the ability to always tell the truth. Jesse continued to talk and she kept her distance, letting her forehead rest against his as he spoke. “Where are you staying…? In akron…? Or lima…?” Rachel almost wanted to see if he had wanted to stay with her – but if he already had somewhere she wasn’t going to bother. Sometimes living together wasn’t the best idea.
Their humming was beautiful and Rachel had to open her eyes as she did it. It hurt so bad, and when he told her that she should probably should rest her voice, all she could do was let out a small whimper. Singing was everything to her, if she couldn’t sing, then what would she do? She obeyed Jesse, and laid against the pillows again, looking up to him with longing eyes – how she wished for him to hold her.
The boy was certain that Santana was the one who had done this to her. But – Santana wouldn’t go this far would she? She could be a jerk – and call you all the names in the book, but normally she didn’t do anything extremely bad. “Where is she now…? Did they take her away…? Did I hit her back?!” Rachel gasped in horror, did she possibly provoke the latina by hitting her? Rachel may be able to dance, and sing and act, but fighting wasn’t anything that Rachel knew about.
“but I can’t miss any practice! I’m Odette!” She huffed. The last thing that she needed was to have her part ripped away from he because of this horrid condition she was in. Turning to the side, she looked behind Jesse, watching the rain hit the window, it had gotten dark outside. “Don't you fret, M'sieur,” She huffed, it was a mix of amusement and sadness, her eyes began to water as she sang, “I don't feel any pain, A little fall of rain Can hardly hurt me now.” Rachel let her eyes fall on jesse, “You're here, that's all I need to know, And you will keep me safe, And you will keep me close, And rain will make the flowers grow.” People would kill for her voice. Even when she was sick, lying in a hospital bed, the words seemed like magic as the flowed from her lips. Les mis, something that would always have a place in her heart.

"What was my agenda?" Jesse repeated with a smirk. It wasn't even a superior smirk, as was his usual expression, but a curious one. He traced circles on the back of her palm, contemplating his answer. He didn't want to tell the story briefly, because it was so much more complicated than that. Because it was a story of epic romance and betrayal by accident and a love lost... the kind of story that any dramatic person, such as them, would adore. "It's a bit of a long story, but I guess we have time.
"When it all started, it had nothing whatsoever to do with the competitions or Vocal Adrenaline. I was doing a favor to your mom, in return for helping me get that scholarship to UCLA," Jesse explained. "The first thing she did was send me to see you at Sectionals. Yes; to everyone else I was a spy checking out the competition. And, actually, you were fantastic." He instantly thought back to the conversation they had when they met, and he criticized her performance, saying that it lacked emotion behind it. That was a lie. Though it sounded incredibly rehearsed (because there is such a thing as too rehearsed), her ballad was completely flawless and brimming with passion. Barbra tells Rachel's life story like that. "Then I was supposed to get to know you. Shelby wanted us to be friends, and at first I shrugged it off thinking that it would be a good acting exercise."
Well, that clearly wasn't the best thing to say, although it was the truth. "Just hear me out. It was different after I actually met you and sang with you. And we went to that Wiggles concert together, and the making out afterward..." Jesse trailed off, thinking back to that night. Mmmmm, that was a nice memory... right up until she asked him to stop, naturally. He was a teenage boy, and he had teenage boy hormones. Could he really be blamed for that? "Ironically, I think I first realized that I liked you when you refused to give yourself to me. Probably because it showed that you don't do anything half-assed, especially a relationship. You had enough self-respect not to throw yourself at a guy you barely knew, and I really admire that about you.
"So, yes, I had feelings for you ever since then, and yes, it hurt a lot when you did 'Run Joey, Run' with Finn and Puck. I think that was a rare occasion where Finn and I agreed," Jesse chuckled. Actually, they'd been on half-decent terms before that. He even listened to what Jesse said sometimes. Huh. "But I still had to finish what I started. The tape from your mom... I didn't find it in the box of your stuff. She gave it to me and I planted it there and pretended to find it. Once you heard what was on that tape, my work was done and I left McKinley for good. As a student, anyway." Jesse squeezed his eyes shut and took a deep breath. What he did hadn't been easy, not then or now. "I didn't want to leave you. I've regretted it every day. I keep thinking back, wondering what would have happened if I did things differently. New Directions didn't want me, but Vocal Adrenaline wouldn't have taken me back if I didn't do what I did. Seeing the look on your face, that day in the parking lot, knowing that I caused it, hurt me even more than that music video. I mean, how cliche is that? The spy falls in love with the girl he's supposed to be spying on." He looked directly into Rachel's eyes, seeing the echo of the pain he caused. It resonated in his own heart in the form of guilt and he hated it.
"Shelby wanted us to be friends, but I had to go and fall in love with you instead," he repeated somewhat lamely. "Because you're like my better half, and all the while in California I couldn't stop thinking about you and how we were going to take Broadway by storm because we had something amazing--"
Oh, good. Rachel Berry had just reduced him to a rambling lunatic. So much for that bad-boy image he had to keep up (well, he only dropped it around her, so it was probably okay). But then he had to shut up, because his mouth was not-so-suddenly preoccupied.
He was a bit surprised, but she pulled him into a kiss. Initially, his mind drew a blank. After all, being kissed by someone you adore that much can really derail your train of thought. Then, his nerves finally got the signal to his brain saying, kiss her back, you dumbass! And he did. He responded eagerly, knowing that it really wasn't just a one-way road anymore and screw it if Finn thought he could get in the way of this because this was real.
She was the first to pull back, leaving him just a little breathless, and yeah, he would do anything for her if she just asked as long as she kept looking at him like that. "We are perfect for each other." He wondered if it would be bad if he went in for another kiss. Her hands in his hair did things to his brain, putting a pleasant haze over his rationality. Not that he protested this. It felt too nice, and he didn't want her to stop.
He delighted in that she wanted to be close to him. His lips curled up into a smile as they leaned against each other, him supporting her almost. "I'm staying with my uncle in Lima again, but if the consulting business goes well, I might get my own place," he mused. In Lima, naturally. He wanted to stay close to her, too.
Telling Rachel not to sing was like telling a shark not to swim. "Baby, it's not forever. But the machine is practically breathing for you, and you need to get your strength back," he reminded her soothingly. He didn't want her to mess up her lungs even worse by not letting them get better.
She asked about Santana, and Jesse was stunned that she was so concerned for her attacker. If it were him, he'd just hope they were in jail and got what was coming to them. "If I'm right, she's in juvie right now. And I don't think you even got the chance to hit her back." That part of the evening was just the slightest bit hazy, likely due to his drinking. "I didn't see the fight. I just saw her kicking and screaming as they dragged her away from you."
"Do you want me to take video? That way you can catch up on whatever you missed when the doctors give you the OK," Jesse offered. Rachel could be stubborn like him sometimes, and this was clearly one of those times, because she began to sing.
Her tone was heartbreakingly stunning, of course, even without enough air behind it. And at first, he had half a mind to stop her, but he wasn't one to get in the way of a performance. Instead, he begrudgingly took Marius' part. "But you will live," he sang, his voice probably a bit rougher than the role called for, "dear God above, if I could close your wounds with words of love." The song fit so well, even if "Eponine" wasn't dying. He would always be her Marius.

Sitting up was difficult, sort of. It wasn’t so much the fact or the physical effort of holding her own weight – it was more the mental ability. Everything that she did take four times as much effort on her scrambled brain. Rachel really just wanted to fall into Jesse and let his arms catch her and just lay there for the rest of her stay here – which she had a feeling by all of the machines was going to be a little bit longer than she wanted. Speaking, the curly haired boy rubbed circles into the back of her hand. Rachel watched him think, confused at why he was thinking so hard at her question. She really didn’t believe it was a hard questions. Of course there wasn’t anything about Jesse that was simple – it was something that attracted Rachel to him in the first place. Something about behind every facet of Jesse there was another that was waiting to smile at he when she unveiled it.
As soon as he began, Rachel was deeply interested in everything. Mostly from the fact that his major reason wasn’t because of Show Choir, as everyone including herself believed. It was her mom, which threw another pang of regret into her stomach. Her mother – the woman who gave birth to her had yet to come visit her. Jesse would have told her if Shelby had come by. It hurt Rachel that her mother would rather be with a child that wasn’t even hers than one that was so much like here. Their voices matched, they liked the same things, they were like living copies of each other; so why would she choose Quinn’s bastard child instead of her.
Coming back to reality, Rachel tried to catch up on what he was telling her, falling in on the end of his sentence listening to how he told her how great her performance was. That surprised her, the first time she had performed for him, well even though. He told her it lacked emotional depth, and that really hurt her. It was one of her pocket songs, that she really loved – and he tore it down before he could even introduce himself. “You liked it? Really? Rain on my Parade was one of my stronger songs, and when you told me that it wasn’t good it made me work so much harder, and feel that much more of my song.” Letting him hold her hand, she gazed at them together before looking back up at Jesse as he continued his story.
The next few strings of words hurt Rachel too. Batting her eyes she looked away and locked her eyes on the window outside, small droplets starting to form on the window panes. That meant the first part of their dating, he didn’t mean anything that he said or did. That comment bit at her until his next one slowly entered her ears and let her cheeks blush, bringing red across her face. Rachel loved the making out as much as he did, and she did love him, but when he told her that he had sex before and it didn’t matter. “Did you mean what you said…? That night…?” Looking up at him through her eyelashes, “Have you…?” Rachel didn’t think that she needed to continue – Jesse should understand.
Rachel continued to listen to him, allowing him to hold her hands. Smiling at his chuckle she decided not to interrupt him again. But jesse continued on, and on, and on, and on – babbling and talking, which he really could have condensed. Even though his words almost seemed ranting, she loved it. How he loved her, and couldn’t stop thinking about her, how he fell in love with her in a ‘behind the scenes’ or Romeo and Juliet sort of way, that is what he said. Then about broadway – and everything. They kissed – well, Rachel kissed him. Rachel pulled him in for just one second of complete passion that she wanted to share with him, so that they would have something that connected them to this moment.
At first, she didn’t feel the normal feel of Jesse’s lips kissing he back, her heart almost stopped. And then as if a light flicked on, Jesse kissed her back. The feeling of every nerve in her body igniting and burning made both her heart rate, and blood pressure rise. But as she pulled away, she realized the lack of physical contact from Jesse to herself. Her hands and their lips were the only things that had touched. Flicking her eyes quickly to his hands, which were not on her, she looked back to him before he opened his eyes. Maybe it was because he was afraid of hurting her, but she still craved his touch. “Two stars, shining bright.” Her hair brushed across her cheek, landing softly on his, almost providing a curtain for the two of them. Eyes gazed only at him and only for him. There wasn’t a thought about Finn, or any other guy from her whole self – she just wanted him and knew that if he loved her like she did now, then their would be no problem.
If Rachel wasn’t connected to the machines, she would have gotten out of the bed and sat in his lap, allowing the boy to wrap his arms around her and gently sing her to sleep, so for now all she had was the feeling of his warm breath across her cheeks, hands running through his soft curls, and their foreheads leaning onto one another. “h-how is he? Your uncle, I’ve seen him a few times at…”Rachel closed her eyes trying to think, “ Yesterday – but recently he hasn’t been there.” For all she knew, he could have just been going when she wasn’t there, but he seemed to love her singing, or so she thought. “I wouldn’t spend money on anywhere…aren’t you going to New York soon..? Find something on Boadway?” why would he get a new home when he would have to lose it as soon as he got it.
But when her weight became too much for the girl, Rachel leaned back on the bed; her head resting lightly on the bright pink pillows that her fathers had brought from their home. Pulling her star blanket – the one with all the embroidered stars on it – up over her she let her gaze fall back on Jesse.”b-but…. I don’t want to wait…” she never wanted to wait. When musical inspiration came to her, she had to let it out.
“JUVIE!” Rachel gasped, having to catch her breath – everything must have been ten times worse than what Rachel had originally assumed. ”w-w-was this…in the news?” If she was in jail this had to have been everywhere. She had to go check on her, as soon as she was allowed out of the hospital she would make her way to see Santana – she had to get her out of there. They needed her just as much as the rest of the members, maybe not her, but they needed Santana.
“Please…and tell everyone…how sorry I am not there..” She wanted to be there so bad – she needed to be there, making sure that every turn was perfect in time, not to mention that her kicks wouldn’t nearly be as high if she didn’t stretch and practice every single day.
Jesse’s voice made Rachel tear up – she was so happy that he was here with her. “Just hold me now, and let it be. Shelter me, comfort me.” A small pause followed as she closed her eyes and listened to his voice. It was something that she could do constantly. “The rain can't hurt me now, This rain will wash away what's past And you will keep me safe And you will keep me closeI'll sleep in your embrace at last…” Rachel hummed the next part lightly – trying to hold in the obvious pain that it was causing her. She hummed, tears lining her eyes until the harmonies came – where she sang again, “So don't you fret, M'sieur Marius I don't feel any pain, A little fall of rain, Can hardly hurt me now…” Rachel took a shaky breath, “That's all I need to know And you will keep me safe ..And you will keep me close… the rain….will make the flowers…grow..” Rachel grabbed her mask putting it over her mouth as she felt her diaphragm scream at her for singing, for hitting every note in perfect succession, for matching those harmonies with him.
Rachel heard a door open and let her eyes, watered still, fly to the door, surprised at who was there. Had they heard the whole song?

Ohio Show Choir Sectionals, 2009. The final group to enter the stage is William McKinley High School's New Directions. Jesse recalled it clearly; there was no program for the competition, which was weird in retrospect, and it was revealed that the numbers done by the two other schools were originally from their set list. Rachel just stepped out from behind the curtain with choreography that looked completely improvised singing a song with near-perfect pitch accuracy (he'd still given her the ten anyway) and flawless tone. It sounded like she'd turned to an old favorite in a time of need, and it certainly looked and sounded like an old favorite.
"Honestly? It was the best thing I'd heard all day. That, and it seems like you connect with everything you sing so effortlessly. I was a hypocrite when I said that. Vocal Adrenaline was all 'soulless automatons'," he chuckled. Of course he was proud of everything she'd accomplished. He was happy for her because she earned whatever she got that was good. In his time, he was incredibly priveleged (well, and talented, but that really went without saying) and got whatever he wanted whenever it came to show choir, just because that was the way things were. He admired that she put work into what she did. "You are your mother's daughter," he grinned. Wait, should he give Shelby a call? She might have wanted to know if her daughter was in the hospital.
As his story continued, the topic of intimacy came up, putting Jesse in the spotlight, and not in a good way. He bit his lip, carefully considering his answer. "As long as I'm being honest... For all intents and purposes, I'm not a virgin. But it was all just quick hook-ups, meaningless. It all stopped after I met you. You made me feel... well, different. Better. It's kind of hard to explain." He hoped she would understand. Rachel made him feel important like none of the others ever did. Once he'd had a taste of that, no one else mattered. All he really knew was that feeling was worth waiting for, he couldn't get it from anyone else, and if she didn't want him it might kill him inside.
That was maybe a bit drastic, but Jesse was known to be a drama queen.
Rachel decided she was going to cut off the conclusion of his story, not that he was complaining. Well, maybe a little. How much closer could he get without hurting her? Her wounds were healing. No, she was probably still sore. But then her hands tightened in his hair and he thought, ah, screw it and he tentatively snaked his arms around her waist, trying to avoid any bandaged areas. Once he was sure it was okay, he tightened his grip around her. He stopped worrying. She would be alright for now. Better than alright, even. Maybe. "That's us. Forever." Forever would be nice.
The moment ended. Jesse wished it could have been longer, but things had to go on. Rachel asked about his uncle. "Well, he wasn't thrilled when I told him what happened at UCLA. With me around, he's got an extra mouth to feed, so he's been busy. He's doing pretty well, otherwise." He shrugged. "He'll appreciate that you asked, considering the circumstances."
"Move to New York? I haven't really thought about that, actually. I'm pretty sure I'd be able to get into something, but you're here," Jesse grinned. "You're the reason I came back in the first place. Besides, there might be a couple talent scouts coming into town, from what I hear." Before he left the school, his theater professor told him that they were looking for new faces to be in a production of Spring Awakening, searching all over the country. Needless to say, that professor was his favorite.
Rachel pouted up at him when he told her not to sing. "I don't make the rules," he told her apologetically. "It's just that at this point, it might do more damage than good." If it were up to him, they'd be singing together, outside of the hospital, because she would be completely healthy by now.
Jesse tried to think on if there was any coverage on her case. He wasn't interviewed for it, nor did he see any cameras in the hospital begging for some time with the girl. "I think it was mentioned. Not much, though. But yeah, she's in juvie for who knows how long. I don't know if the case came up or anything, but I doubt she'll be there too long." At least, she'd better not be. There was something big coming up in New Directions that required all the members, and Santana had a better voice than Lauren in his opinion.
"Of course I will. They miss you there," Jesse said soothingly. As excited as he was for Swan Lake, nothing was the same without Rachel there. Everyone made a lot more mistakes without her around to keep them on their toes (wow, that was a terrible pun).
As Rachel sang (which she shouldn't have been, but it couldn't be helped), Jesse filled in the pauses with Marius' part. "You could live a thousand years if I could show you how. I won't desert you now." Their voices went well together, as they always had. If she didn't sound as weak, it would be almost like "Hello". "Hush-a-bye, dear Eponine; a little fall of rain can hardly hurt you now. I'm here. I will stay with you 'til you are sleeping," he harmonized with her somewhat breathless voice, holding her hand comfortingly. This wasn't the easiest task for her now, as effortless as it was before the fight. "... and rain... will make the flowers... grow." She started gasping as the song drew to a close and Jesse passed her the air mask, which she pressed desperately to her face.
A knock on the door. Jesse spun toward the noise. Who could it be?

Finn had been having a boys weekend with Puck, they'd gone fishing. Hadn't caught a damn thing while fishing but that was an improvement on last time. The last time they had gone fishing the two of them had gotten the flu and food poisoning. It turns out you had to cook your eggs properly or well, lets just say that it didn't usually end well. Phone reception had been awful all weekend, he'd gone sporadic service, a missed called from Jesse St. James which was no real loss to him. So when he pulled up to his mothers and Burt's house, he wasn't really expecting anything but a nice long soak in the bath. He'd been in the house for about twenty minutes and was soaking in a hot bath, his mom knocked on the door.
"Finn are you in there?" She asked.
"Yes Ma." Finn said.
"Have you spoken to Rachel this weekend?" She asked.
"No, I had crummy cell reception." Finn called to her.
"Son you need to go see her, people have been trying to get hold of you all weekend. She was attacked." His mother told him that got his attention. "Some Jesse guy tried to get through to you but no answer." She said to him.
"What the hell was she doing with St. James." Finn snarled as he sat up in the bath. All thoughts of a soak gone from his mind, if that prick was anywhere near Rachel again while he was on a boys weekend he was going to hit the roof. Jesse's head would roll if he had made a move on his girl while he was away, grabbing the towel as he climbed out of the bath draining the watter from the tub he wrapped the towel around his waist before exiting the bathroom.
"Finn honey." His mother said to him. "Are you okay?" She asked.
"I want some answers." Finn said to her as he headed back to his room.
Twenty minutes he was back in his truck and heading for the hospital, he didn't bother to call ahead. He was more concerned and down right angry that Jesse had been with Rachel when he was not in town. Finn rolled into the street she lived in and pulled up in front of the house in question. It wouldn't help to go in their angry, he could do that when he had some facts. But the girl had been attacked and Jesse had been the one to call him. Jesse probably figured that he was the one person that Finn wouldn't care about missing a call from.
"Get it together Hudson." Finn said as he climbed out of the truck slamming the driver side door shut. He walked ino the hospital at quite the pace. He wanted to know what the hell was going on with his girlfriend at that moment in time.
What he saw turned his stomach, apparently not only had he missed the attack but the two of them were singing to each other in the hospital room. What the hell okay now he was more than a little angry. Maybe he was blowing a casket over nothing, but Jesse did had something of a reputation for doing this stuff. He'd come back to get in their heads twice. To make him feel as small as it was humanly possible, which was no small feat. Stepping away from the window, he allowed his fist slam against the door in a noisey knock that would get their attention with any lucky.
"Calmly does it." He muttered though he was having something of a hard time reigning in the irrational anger that was coursing through his body right at that moment. Why the he hell hadn't Rachel called him himself, why leave it to the twat that was Jesse St. fricking James to do something that she should have done herself. He didn't know who to be more angry with, Jesse or Rachel, he'd probably end up with being angry at the pair of them.
Stepping back out of the way, to give himself as much distance from the pair as was humanly possible. He plastered his best false smile on his face and prepared to face the pair of them. It wouldn't be a very convincing smile as he was pretty sure his whole body language would give everything else away.
"I will not knock Jesse on his ass. I will not knock Jesse on his ass." Finn muttered under his breath, it was a mantra that he would try to live by.

That day was a scary one for the brunette. Of course she did have that Funny Girl song tucked away in her back pocket for the last few years – but performing it for the first time was still a bit of a breathtaking moment. She herself was proud of how well she had done. Though – when Jesse had told her that her singing was less than average, her heart sank, and the only way to bring back her confidence was to make sure that no matter what song he heard her sing, before, now or later there would be extreme passion in her eyes and perfect pitch to her voice. Never again would someone tell her that it wasn’t exquisite.
A blush filled in across her cheeks and she couldn’t keep eye contact with him. Something about compliments sent Rachel’s eye back down to her hands. Only for a moment could she catch his eyes before having to look away again. Batting her big brown eyes, Rachel took a look at Jesse, “I wouldn’t call everyone from Vocal Adrenaline soulless, Because there is you.” She smiled before continuing, “I had that song in my back pocket for so long, when you told me it wasn’t good I was actually shocked – and hurt – but I think, even though it hurt, it helped me so much, that I wouldn’t be as good as I am today without your accidental pushing.” Even though she would have been fine without his harsh treatment on her vocal standings, it was something that truly killed her self-esteem for a few days, but made her stronger.
Jesse spoke again and Rachel nodded in respect, and then held her tears back, “My mom…” Rachel sighed, “Does she ever ask about me…?” What did Rachel even know – Jesse probably hadn’t seen her mom since she did, and that was nearly a year and a half ago, but it was clear that her mom was much more into Quinn’s bastard child than she was her own flesh and blood, “Does she even know I’m here…? Does she even care?” Questions she didn’t assume would be answered but she said them anyways, hoping to feel something, but not feeling a thing.
Rachel listened to her story, following along, and feeling her heart drop as he brought up that night they went to the wiggles concert. Of course she hadn’t forgotten that night – it was wonderful, and passionate, and erotic, up until he revealed to her how he didn’t feel the same way about, sex, as she did. Really at first she had just assumed that he had told her that he had done it before to make her feel more open to doing things with him, of course she still wouldn’t do it. Now, when she questioned him about it, his face looked nearly hurt. It was true – and that hurt her, more than she would have liked, but she couldn’t help the pain that surged through her when she realized that if she stayed with him, then giving herself to him wouldn’t be special. “O-oh… Well I’m glad you stopped…” There wasn’t a lot she could say – but it was obviously hurting her. She clearly wished that it was different – that she would have been that special one.
Though when he kissed her, when his lips flared against hers she melted and forgot everything that hurt her and fell into a state of bliss. She could feel the pain from her nose radiate through her but couldn’t seem to want to pull away. The feel of his arms and his fingers snaking around her waist turning on every nerve of her body making her nearly faint in excitement. She loved this, oh dear god she loved this so much. “and ever.” She murmured almost breathlessly to him. Her mind fluttered to finn for a moment before coming back to Jesse, jesse and his soft, curly hair.
The feel of the bed wasn’t exactly the same feeling of the boy holding her, but it was ok, warm with the star embroidered blanket covering her body. ”I’m glad, he’s doing ok. He’s a really a very nice man.” A smile flashed on her face as he continued. “I want to see him soon.” She was trying to make plans already for when she got out – but even when Jesse was out in California, he would come and see her and tell her how great she was. He made her feel good.
“I didn’t mean now.” Rachel grinned, “Save up, wait – ill be on my way to broadway sooner than later, and when I make it there, you can come with me.” It sounded extremely far fetched, but for Rachel it sounded like something that could happen.
Rachel giggled at his swan lake pun, well ballet pun, but either way it brought a smile on her face, “I didn’t know I was one of those people that everyone misses. I know that I would be extremely upset if my understudy gets my part – but they would never let that happen would they…?” The truth of the matter was that the girl really couldn’t dance, she only got the part because she was sleeping with the musical producer – and put her in an understudy position. That would be the death of her.
The singing took much more out of the girl than she would have assumed and she covered her mouth with the breathing mask that the doctors had wanted on her at all times and took in sharp ragged breaths, before hearing that sharp knocks on the door. Pulling her face from looking at jesse, her eyes met a guy she really wasn’t ready to see. “Finn..” she said breathlessly, looking at him, letting her hand fall from Jesse’s as she tried to sit up, doing it a bit to quickly and wincing slightly. Her bandages might be a lot for him.
“w-we c-called, or jesse did….” Rachel couldn’t seem to look him in the eye as she spoke, something inside her made her feel completely worthless, and like a vial girl for being with jesse too. Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked at him, “Where were you finn, you weren’t there when I needed you.”

Jesse grinned broadly at her words. He had a soul. According to Vocal Adrenaline and everything they ever taught him, soul was the only thing he lacked (which was why funk was such a failure for the group, no matter how talented they all were; it was just worked out of them all). "I'm glad to have helped you, at least, but you really don't need it at this point. You are flawless." He would have said that she had come far, but in truth she hadn't. There wasn't much more she could do with her outrageous skill. As good as she was, she could go to the big leagues straight out of high school, in Jesse's professional opinion. She could land a big role, easy. It was everyone else who he had to worry about.
It had been a long time since he'd last seen Shelby. That was on the last meeting of Vocal Adrenaline in his time, after they won at Nationals and she announced that she wouldn't be the director the following year in continuation of her maternity leave. At the time, he thought nothing of it, but she was the teacher he remembered most fondly. This was likely due to the fact that she was the only teacher he saw during the day, but favorite she was nonetheless. Jesse was suddenly hit by a wave of guilt. They'd had sporadic contact while he was still in school, but he didn't even think to call her to tell her about Rachel. "We don't speak very much these days," he admitted. "That being the case, I have no idea whether or not she knows you're here. I'm sure that if she did, she'd be here in a heartbeat." As strange as it might have been to think of a teacher like that, he sort of always thought that Shelby was a second mom to him. She was a very pushy, ambitious mom who wanted the very best for her kids and would settle for nothing less, but she was like family to him. Now she was more the very distant family who sent and received Christmas cards, but not much else. He usually shrugged it off and attributed it to her adopted daughter, because babies need a lot of attention. But he didn't think her the type to turn on her own flesh and blood.
When he was with other girls in the past, he never really considered the consequences it might have. Jesse felt the sharp pang of regret, hearing the deadened tone in Rachel's voice. "There's a difference between having sex and making love. What I was doing always... lacked something important: the emotional connection that I feel with you. With you, it's not just some chemical reaction. For that, you will always be my first." He didn't say it then, but he knew he also wanted her to be the last.
"Maybe when you get out," Jesse offered, "you can come over for dinner sometime. I'm sure he'd love that." He was more thrilled than he cared to admit that his family took so well to Rachel. Of course he adored her (in his eyes, it was impossible not to), but if they got along then it was like she was part of the family herself, almost.
Together? In New York? "Sounds like a plan," Jesse smirked. "Considering how talented we are, it shouldn't be too much trouble to get into anything." He had confidence in his skill as much as hers. Ideally, they would work together on the same show, cast opposite one another as the leads. He had currently in the bank a meager savings (from his job at Sheets N Things) that could potentially be enough to pay rent, but with Rachel's suggestion he considered the possibility of investing in other things. Naturally, these things now involved living with Rachel, and his imagination began to build a life for them.
He was broken from his fantasy at the mention of her absolutely horrid understudy. "God, I hope not. She shouldn't even be allowed onstage." He didn't want to picture what the performance would be like with her as Odette instead of Rachel. Not only would it be completely disgusting to be anywhere near her, but she would screw everything up. She never practiced and therefore could do nothing right, even in life, and Jesse just knew that she was doomed to fail at everything she did.
Finn entered the room after he and Rachel finished singing. Jesse's expression hardened. After such a moment with Rachel, Finn was the last person he wanted to see. He struggled not to start anything, though, because he didn't want to put any more stress on Rachel, who was having enough trouble breathing as it was.
"What are you doing here?" the idiot glared.
"What should be your job, if you're supposed to be her boyfriend," Jesse growled. "You're supposed to be around when she needs you. Lucky I was there. And you should know I wouldn't talk to you unless it was a matter of life and death."
"I told you I was going camping with the guys!" Finn whined to Rachel. "There was no phone service out there! But I really can't believe you would go behind my back to be with him."
That did it. "What gives you the right to be mad at her? She was in a goddamn coma while you were gone, and you think you can just walk in and everything would be the same? Newsflash, moron: it isn't that easy. She doesn't want you anymore."
